Drug Abuse Is On The Rise With Baby Boomers

Drug addiction does not discriminate and could happen to anyone regardless of age, sex, race, financial or social status or religion.  While addiction is a concern with everyone; Narconon Suncoast, a non-profit drug and alcohol rehabilitation program recently took a look at the baby boomers generation and the rise of drug abuse associated with them.  Unfortunately problems with drug abuse are often overlooked in individuals over the age of 50; but, this is not something that should be ignored.

According to a new study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) drug abuse among the elderly is rapidly rising. Based on data gathered in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2006 to 2008, an estimated 4.3 million American adults ages 50 and older (or 4.7 percent of this population) have abused an illicit substance in the past year. The most widely abused substance in this age group was marijuana/hashish at 44.9 percent of older adults who use illicit substances, followed by nonmedical use of prescription drugs at 33.4 percent. SAMHSA has predicted that the increase in substance abuse among older adults will require the doubling of substance abuse treatment services for older adults by the year 2020 in order for this generation to be accommodated.

Substance abuse poses a greater threat to older adults because they often face more health concerns and complications that could be worsened by the use of other medications and substances.  Withdrawal symptoms could often be hazardous or even fatal especially if not handled properly.  There are treatment facilities available to address the specific needs of older individuals that will properly monitor and care for them while overcoming their addictions. We all know someone who is suffering but, sometimes it’s difficult to find treatment that really works.  Narconon Suncoast Rehabilitation Center located in central Florida specializes in drug and alcohol addiction treatment and offers a program that demonstrates lasting success.

One of the advantages of Suncoast Rehab Center is that they offer people a non-traditional approach to establishing a sober life.  The program that they offer is entirely drug-free and includes a detox program that utilizes exercise and sauna.  This significantly reduces drug and alcohol cravings as the toxic substances are pushed out of the body.  This frees the person from the harmful effects of drugs as it removes the drug residues for the fat tissue.

The chances of someone quitting drugs or alcohol without a drug treatment program is very slim.  This is why it is important to find a program that is going to work and give an individual the tools to stay off of drugs and alcohols for the rest of their lives.  The goal of Suncoast Rehabilitation Center is to have graduates who not only live drug-free lives but, who also go on to lead stable, ethical and productive lives as well.

One of the most successful centers in the Narconon network is Narconon Suncoast Drug Rehabilitation Center, located in central Florida. Here they offer a full-service in-patient center that delivers the full Narconon program; which is considered to be the most comprehensive drug rehabilitation program in the world.  Narconon Suncoast deals directly with each individual’s addiction; assessing their personal recovery needs and goals.

Narconon Suncoast has achieved a remarkable level of success in its first year of operation both from the State and student standpoint. The Department of Children and Family Services (DCF) did its routine inspection as it does for any drug rehab facility and Narconon Suncoast received one of the highest scores ever given to a new facility.
