Admiral William Fallon has resigned as Chief of the United States forces in the Middle East and Central Asia amid claims that he disagreed with the Bush administration over Iran. Fallon has been the head of U.S. Central Command for more than a year.
Fallon’s sudden resignation comes after a report in Esquire magazine that implies he was against military action in Iran. Fallon released a statement today saying, “Although I don’t believe there have ever been any differences about the objectives of out policy in the Central Command area of responsibility, the simple perception that there is makes it difficult for me to effectively serve America’s interest there.”
He said the article showed “disrespect for the president” and “resulted in embarrassment.”
Defense Secretary Robert Gales accepted Fallon’s decision with “reluctance and regret.”
“We have tried between us to put this misperception behind us over a period of months, and, frankly, just have not been successful in doing so,” Gales added.
Fallon will be replaced by Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey.
