2010 FIFA World Cup Scores: Mexico Avoids Upset Bid from South Africa, Nets Draw

The 2010 FIFA World Cup got underway on Friday and host nation South Africa nearly pulled off a major upset as they led Mexico late but a goal in the 79th minute off the foot of Rafael Marquez evened the score at 1-1, a mark that would stand when the final whistle blew.

After a scoreless first half the South Africans got on the board in the 55th minute with a strike from Siphiwe Tshabalala, sending the partisan crowd into a frenzy that only subsided when Marquez put home the equalizer 24 minutes later.

A win would have been huge for the South Africans who still have Uruguay and France to play in Group A action but a draw keeps their hops of advancing into the second round alive.
