Nelson Mandela Family Tragedy

Mandela's Great Granddaughter Dies

According to a report from the Associate Press, former South African President Nelson Mandela missed the opening World Cup game (Mexico vs. South Africa) because of a tragic death in the family. On Thursday, after attending the World Cup's kickoff concert, Mandela's thirteen-year-old great-granddaughter was killed in a one-car accident, just a day after her birthday. The Nelson Mandela Foundation later confirmed that Mandela would not attend the opening ceremony or the opening match of the tournament, both of which took place on Friday. The foundation's spokesman Sello Hatang said, "Mr. Nelson Mandela this morning learnt of the tragic death in an accident of his great granddaughter Zenani Mandela. It would therefore be inappropriate for him to personally attend the FIFA World Cup opening celebrations." Understandably, Mandela and his family are devastated by the horrible and untimely death. The driver of the car, who has yet to be named, has been arrested and charged with drunk driving. He may also face culpable homicide charges. (Sources: the Associated Press)
