Salvia Divinorum may be Outlawed in Minnesota

Lawmakers in Minnesota have joined a growing list of state officials that are contemplating the eradication of Salvia divinorum, a plant that has become known as “the next marijuana.”

While Salvia divinorum is currently legal the effects it produces when smoked or chewed mirror those of several banned hallucinogenic plants. There have been eight states that already have restrictions on the plant and Minnesota is looking to join that list as state Representative Joe Atkins has already introduced a bill that would prohibit the plant in Minnesota.

The rise in popularity of Salvia divinorum has led to an increased presence in schools and because of its cheap price and short tern effects many see the plant as harmless. While that may be the perception the plant has actually been called a contributing factor in the suicide of a Delaware teen several years ago.

Salvia divinorum is native to Mexico but is easily attainable over the Internet as well as through local producers.
