Jack Kevorkian, also known as "Dr. Death", is looking to run for office in the House of Representatives.
“We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington,” the 79-year-old pathologist told the Oakland (Mich.) Press. Kevorkian told the newspaper he is planning to run as an independent in the Michigan’s Ninth District.
Kevorkian is now on parole after being released from prison last year after serving eight years in the euthanasia of one of his subjects, the minimum sentence for second-degree murder.
The seat is now held by Rep. Joe Knollenberg, an eight-term Republican who is running for re-election.
Many believe that Kevorkian's announcement is a publicity stunt.
Kevorkian says he assisted in the suicides of at least 130 people from 1990 to 1998, when he was charged in the assisted suicide of a 52-year-old man with Lou Gehrig’s disease that was filmed and broadcast on 60 Minutes. As a condition of his release, he agreed not to assist in any more suicides.
