As the 7th Anniversary for Narconon of Georgia approaches, many people have much to reflect on the humble beginnings of the most effective drug rehab in Georgia.
The beginnings of Narconon of Georgia Drug Rehab started in April of 2001. “I really had no idea that my life would take such a change seven years ago,” states Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon of Georgia. “A chance encounter with a homeless girl who was addicted to drugs led the way to me opening the most effective drug rehab in Georgia.”
Late night at a local Waffle House. Ms. Rieser was off work, and happened to notice a girl, obviously homeless, who looked like she needed help. Ms. Rieser recalls, “I asked her if she needed help, and she said she needed a place to stay for a few days. I decided to be be a good Samaritan and let her stay with me and my daughter until she could get back on her feet. She seemed like a nice girl down on her luck.”
Little did Ms. Rieser know that this nice girl was addicted to crack cocaine. After getting this admission from the former homeless girl, Ms. Rieser decided to look for a place that could help her. “From my training as a nurse, I knew that drugs affected the body as well as the mind,” comments Ms. Rieser. “However, all the programs I looked into were based on the twelve-steps, and while this model works well with alcohol, it did not seem to me that this is what she needed, as she was under-nourished and obviously not well physically.
“I was amazed that Georgia has a deficit in the quantity of drug rehabs per capita. It became very frustrating to try to locate one that could service my new friend.”
After finding the Narconon program in Oklahoma, sending the girl there for drug rehab treament, and seeing the spectacular results, Ms. Rieser decided to open a Narconon locally to help those with similar problems. “I finally found a rehab with good statistics that not only addressed the mental side of drug addiction but also the bio-physical side of drug addiction,” comments Ms. Rieser. “The Narconon Drug Rehab Program has a 76% success rate, and I wanted to make sure one was opened in Georgia.”
After visiting Narconon and training in the Narconon Drug Rehab protocol, Ms. Rieser was ready to start. She did it the hard way-getting with a local judge and convincing him to grant permission to release 20 misdemeanor drug offenders to her care to complete the Narconon Drug Rehab Program. “That was the beginning.’ Comments Ms. Rieser. “ And we have been going forward ever since. But what happened next is another story.”
