Argentina did just enough to give Diego Maradona a victory in his World Cup coaching debut, knocking off Nigeria 1-0 in a match that had countless opportunities for both sides but just the one goal. The win moves Argentina into a tie with South Korea atop Group B.
That goal came early as Gabriel Heinze put a header in the back of the net off a corner kick, rocketing the ball past Vincent Enyeama in the sixth minute.
While there would be no more goals the rest of the way both sides had their chances, especially Gonzalo Higuain who had at least three solid chances to boost Argentina’s tally. As for Lionel Messi, the crafty Argentinean forward, there were no goals but his ability to control the pace made it obvious as to why he is considered one of the best in the world.
