Kyrgyzstan has appealed to Russia, asking the country for help in ending violent ethnic clashes in its southern city of Osh where at least 60 people have been left dead.
Fighting between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz has raged for two days in Osh as tension overland and housing has boiled over. Interim leader Roza Otunbayeva has called the situation “out of control” and said “We need the entry of outside armed forces to calm the situation down.”
Otunbayeva asked Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to supply those armed forces but he has been reluctant, calling the matter “an internal conflict” and does not see the cause for committing troops at the moment.
Medvedev did say Russia would provide humanitarian aid but that has provided little comfort to those wrapped up in the violence. Thousands of residents in the area have been forced to flee from their burning homes while dodging gunfire.
The interim government in Kyrgyzstan has tried to quell the violence, sending in troops to restore order but that has been unsuccessful as fighting continues to spread, threatening a second southern city, Jalalabad.
