Pam Babcock, a 35 year old resident of
After two years of caring for his girlfriend, McFarren called 911 on Wednesday. Babcock was on the toilet long enough for the skin to grow around the seat. Authorities arrived at the residence stunned. “We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital,” says the Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple. The seat had to be surgically removed.
Now authorities are questioning if McFarren has committed a crime. They wonder why he waited so long to get help. McFarren, an antique store owner claims that “It just kind of happened one day; she went in and had been in there a little while, the next time it was a little longer. Then she got it in her head she was going to stay – like it was a safe place for her.”
McFarren states that she wasn’t on the toilet seat for two years straight, claiming that she took baths, changed clothes and ate in the room. He continues to say that they had normal conversations together, they just all happened to take place in the bathroom.
Two years later, McFarren finally called for help. Authorities couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Babcock’s legs were atrophied and her body literally grew into the seat. “She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body,” says Whipple. “It is hard to imagine. … I still have a hard time imagining it myself.”
The disoriented Babcock initially refused to leave her bathroom sanctuary, but was eventually coaxed out by paramedics.
McFerren, who had been with Babcock for 16 years, claims that he tried to convince her to leave the room on a daily basis, but had no luck. “Her reply would be, ‘Maybe tomorrow,’” says Whipple. “According to him, she did not want to leave the bathroom.”
Babcock is doing well, although she is not cooperating with doctors or law enforcement. There is significant nerve damage in her legs leading doctors to believe that there is a very good chance that she will never walk again.
A neighbor of the couple commented on the bizarre situation stating that Babcock always kept herself in her home and rarely ever went outside.
