Burmese Government Denies Reports of Nuclear Weapons Program

The Burmese government has denied reports that the country is developing a nuclear weapons program, insisting the allegations were “politically motivated” and labeled them as “baseless accusations.”

Those accusations came from a documentary produced by a broadcaster from the Norway-based Democratic Voice of Burma. According to that report a Burmese defector provided information regarding the country’s intentions to develop nuclear weapons.

In that documentary Burma’s Major Sai Thein Win said he had been part of an operation to develop a nuclear reactor and rocket engine parts.

Burma said that information had been baseless and Win had never been a major but was in fact an army defector. The government went on to say they have “no intention to possess nuclear weapons as military power.”

While Burma has denied any intention of developing and possessing nuclear weapons there have been a number of concerns from the international community regarding the country’s relationship with North Korea.
