Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr., the 17-year-old suspect arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of University of North Carolina student Eve Carson, will face an additional charge of first-degree murder as police now believe he is responsible for the death of Duke University graduate student Abhijit Mahato in January.
Lovette surrendered to police on Thursday, less than 36 hours after police arrested 21-year-old Demario James Atwater and charged him with first-degree murder in Carson’s death.
Lovette is believed to be the individual photographed at an ATM machine trying to use Carson’s bank card. Police received several tips about the suspect and shortly after 4:00 a.m. Thursday Durham Police and SWAT members surrounded a house with Lovette eventually surrendering.
Charges of first-degree murder had been filed against Lovette on Wednesday and when he was apprehended on Thursday he was quickly charged with the murder of Mahato, a 29-year-old Duke University doctoral student studying computational mechanics.
Police had already arrested 19-year-old Stephen Lavance Oates with the murder.
