From its beginnings in 2001, Narconon of Georgia Drug Rehab has stressed drug education as the best way to reduce drug addiction now and for future generations.
“We feel that with the proper drug education given at an early age, the number of drug addicts needing help will diminish in the future,” comments Mary Rieser, Executive Director of the Narconon Drug Rehab Program in Georgia . “Although we deliver the best drug rehab program in the world today, it is not enough to simply rehabilitate an addict. We must do whatever we can to keep children from ever trying drugs. The best way to do this is drug education.”
After opening as a pilot program in Georgia with 20 inmates released from prison in 2001, and later opening up as a private drug rehab program, one of Narconon of Georgia’s main activities has been drug education.
Ms. Sunshine Lewis, head of Community Relations with Narconon, agrees. “Drug use among youngsters in Georgia and nationwide has skyrocketed in the last two decades. In a recent survey, almost 10% of 12th graders had tried Vicodin, a prescription opiate, and almost 6% has tried Oxycontin, also a prescription opiate. Our children’s lives are affected by the lack of drug ed in school and we are facing an epidemic unless we do something now.”
Ms. Lewis, along with Mr. Geno Lewis, has spearheaded the effort of teaching young children the dangers of drug abuse. Giving Narconon Drug Education Lectures in dozens of schools, after school programs, recreational centers, and churches, the Narconon of Georgia Drug Education team has delivered lectures to over 20,000 children in 2007. “Several police chiefs in the communities have expressed their gratitude for the work we do,” states Ms. Lewis. “By starting early in drug education efforts, we can avoid needless misery in families and communities in our city.”
