Lawrence Lovette On $3 Million Bond For Death of Abhijit Mahato

Lawrence Alvin Lovette was ordered held under a $3 million bond Friday in connection with the shooting death of a Duke graduate student. Lovette is also the second suspect charged with murder in the death of UNC Student Body President Eve Carson.

Lovette was charged Thursday with first-degree murder charge in the Jan. 18 slaying of Abhijit Mahato and several other charges connected to crimes from mid-February.

According to the arrest warrant, Lovette allegedly stole a cellular phone, wallet and an iPod,  a combined value of about $300, before Mahato was shot to death inside his apartment.

Brown set Lovette's next court date for March 27.

Lovette, 17, was wanted on a first-degree murder charge in connection with Carson's March 5 shooting death in Chapel Hill. Durham police arrested him early Thursday after nearly two hours of negotiations.

Lovette is expected to appear before an Orange County judge Friday afternoon to face charges in Carson's death. The 22-year-old UNC senior was found shot to death about a half-mile from UNC's campus.

Lovette's criminal record includes charges of breaking and entering and larceny, for which he was on probation when he was arrested Thursday.

He was due in a Durham courtroom this month on charges of first-degree burglary, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and felony larceny after breaking and entering, all related to two crimes from February.

The other suspect in Carson's death, Demario James Atwater, 21, is not charged in Mahato's death, but Durham Chief Jose Lopez said Thursday police were looking to see if he might have been involved.

Atwater, who has a record dating to 2004, had been in Wake County Superior Court on a felony probation violation March 3, but the hearing was rescheduled because of a clerical error.
