Southern California Rattled by Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Southern California on Monday evening, shaking homes and buildings but causing no serious damage or injuries.

The quake’s epicenter was about 85 miles east of San Diego in Imperial County, close to the California-Mexico border. This was the first large quake to strike the area since Easter Sunday when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit Baja California and Southern California.

Seismologists have said Monday’s tremor, which struck just before 9:30 p.m. local time, was an aftershock of the previous quake, pointing out that aftershocks can continue for months and even years after the initial quake hits.

While Monday’s earthquake was just east of San Diego it could be felt by those in Los Angeles
