It may not have been the way he wanted to assume the office but David Paterson is now officially the Governor of New York after a swearing in ceremony made the 53-year-old the state’s first black governor.
Paterson took the oath of office following a nasty scandal last week that revealed then governor Eliot Spitzer had been involved a prostitution ring. The fallout of the scandal and the surfacing of Ashley Dupre, the call-girl known simply as ‘Kristen,” led to Spitzer’s decision to resign.
Spitzer’s resignation opened the door for then Lieutenant Governor Paterson to move into the Governors House.
After being sworn in Paterson said “This transition today is an historic message to the world: That we live by the same values that we profess, and we are a government of laws, not individuals.”
Paterson made clear that he was in office to work saying, “"We move forward. Today is Monday. There is work to be done. There was an oath to be taken. There's trust that needs to be restored. There are issues that need to be addressed.”
