Israel’s Security Cabinet Discussing Possibility of Easing Gaza Strip Blockade

Israel’s security cabinet is meeting to discuss the possibility of easing the current blockade of the Gaza Strip, a move that comes just weeks after a controversial attack on a flotilla of ships attempting to transport aid to the area.

While Israel has stood by the action it took in those encounters they have felt growing pressure by the international community to reevaluate its stance concerning Gaza. Israel tightened its blockade of the Gaza Strip in 2007 when Hamas took control of the area and since that time the Palestinian territory has had to rely on the smuggling of goods through underground tunnels for several basic needs.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with form British PM Tony Blair on Monday and said his country was committed to the principle of “significant change” but that may not open the door too wide. Netanyahu has always carried a hard-line stance against Gaza and the fears that Hamas will use the easing of a blockade as a means to launch attacks on Israel remains present in his mind.

What will likely happen is the creation of a new list of banned items, a move that would eliminate the current list of permitted goods. The intention of the blockade has been to prevent war materials from reaching the Gaza Strip while allowing humanitarian aid in but that has not always been the case.
