David Paterson Sworn in as New York Governor, Admits to Affair

David Paterson rose to governor of New York largely in part because of the marital infidelities of former governor Eliot Spitzer. Just hours after Paterson was sworn in on Monday the 53-year-old admitted that he too had a sustained affair from 1999 until 2001.

Paterson and his wife, Michelle, each admitted they had had affairs while they were going through a rough period in their marriage. Rather than end their relationship the two opted for counseling to repair their marriage.

It has been less than one-week since Spitzer announced he would resign as governor following a scandal involving a high-priced prostitution ring and the introduction of Ashley Dupre to the media. Once his resignation was announced Paterson, then lieutenant governor, was promoted to governor of New York, making him the first black to hold that office in the state’s history.
