Millions of Credit Card and Debit Card Numbers Stolen from Grocery Store Chain

Hannaford Bros. grocery chain announced on Monday that a major security breach has led to more than 4.2 million credit card and debit card numbers were possibly stolen during a three-month period from Dec. 7 through March 10.

 

While 4.2 million numbers were exposed cases of fraud related to the security breach have been limited to 1,800 cases. Hannaford has assured customers that no names, addresses or telephone numbers were part of that breach.

 

Hannaford operates 165 stores in the Northeast as well as 106 Sweetbay stores in Florida. They also have a presence in several independent grocery stores that sell their products. All of these stores were affected by the security breach.

 

Speaking about the company’s action to protect its customers from a future breach Hannaford president and CEO Ronald C. Hodge stated, “We have taken aggressive steps to augment our network security capabilities.”
