Detroit City Council Asks Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to Resign

The Detroit City council voted 7-1 on Tuesday in favor of asking Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to resign, citing 33 reasons why he should step down. Among those reasons were accusations that Kilpatrick “repeatedly obfuscates the truth.’

In the resolution it is noted “there is an overwhelming and growing sentiment amongst citizens of Detroit that the City Council should stand firm against Mayor Kilpatrick and seek his resignation.”

Kilpatrick has insisted he will not resign and his press secretary, Denise Tolliver, released a statement that read, “City Council, according to the Charter, is free to pass non-binding resolutions, however while certain members have been playing judge and jury in the court of public opinion, Mayor Kilpatrick has continued to stay focused on advancing bold initiatives such as his economic stimulus package. As Mayor Kilpatrick has said before, he will stay in office, he will stay focused on city business and he will continue to lead our city forward.”
