CREATIVE PLANET’S DIGITAL PRODUCTION BUZZ COVERS NEW SONY CAMERAS, “SPEED RACER,” DVD FORMATS, INTERNET ADVERTISING AND DEMO REELS
Digital Media Podcast Features Rob Willox, Bruce Nazarian, Charles E. Little II and David Viner
The current episode of Creative Planet’s Digital Production BuZZ, the world's only interactive talk radio for digital production, post-production and distribution, features Sony’s Rob Willox; Bruce Nazarian, President of the DVD Association, Charles E. Little II of Tatu Creative, Inc.; and 60Frames’ David Viner.
Rob Willox, Director of Marketing for the content creation division in Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Production Systems Division discussed – among a number of topics – Sony’s newest cameras, using Sony’s new F-23 camera for “Speed Racer” and multiplying video formats. “This year starting at NAB we’ve got eight different high-definition production cameras that are non-consumer under $10,000. I think that’s the first time in our history we’ve had that rich of a product offering on the lower-end and I think that’s in response to a growing community of people who want to create content on a budget,” said Willox. “I think the whole industry is trying to move in a direction that high-definition in production is attainable pretty much by anybody at various quality levels.”
Digital Production BuZZ regular Bruce Nazarian provided his take on the continuing impact of Blu-Ray DVD on the industry. “I do want to remind everyone that SD DVD is not a dead format. There are over 93,000 DVD titles that have been released in the nearly 10 years DVD has been around as a format,” he noted. “You can create wide-screen content very inexpensively on standard definition DVDs if you don’t really need at this point to absolutely, positively, have to go to Blu-Ray…it’s a little more affordable.”
Creating and marketing an impressive demo reel was discussed with Charles E. Little II, creative head of Tatu Creative, Inc. Little advised, “I think the most important thing regarding making a demo reel in this day and age is to start with a creative mind and really have a good idea of what your reel is going to look like before you even set out creating it, and how it’s going to be different from what else is out there in the world.”
Finally, David Viner of 60Frames gave his scoop on internet advertising and how to integrate ads and content. “If you look at generalized advertising in the world today, there’s tons of advertising that’s sort of not specifically targeted at a particular niche – just broadbased advertising that’s meant to build brand awareness,” said Viner. “On the other hand, you have lots of very specialized advertising. You know, most of the advertising like on things like MTV – or even online in a lot of smaller niche social networks – are things that are targeted at extremely specific demographic and psychographic categories of people.”
