Vicki Van Meter Dies at 26

Pilot Vicki Van Meter, who is known for flying a plane across the country at 11-years-old, has died at 26. Van Meter was found dead in her Meadville, Pennsylvania home on Sunday. A Crawford County coroner said she appears to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“She was unhappy, but it was hard for her to open up about that and we all thought that she was coping. This really is a shock, because we didn’t see the signs,” says her brother Daniel Van Meter.

Van Meter was in sixth grade when she flew across the United States accompanied only by a flight instructor. She also made headlines for being the youngest girl to ever fly across the Atlantic.

She later got a degree in criminal justice and wanted to go back to school to study psychology. “She led a full and interesting life…She had more guts than any of us could ever imagine,” said her mother Corinne Van Meter. “We will miss her dearly, but we are very, very aware that she is doing important work somewhere else right now.”
