Coalmine Explosion in Colombia Kills at least 8 Miners, Dozens Remain Trapped

An explosion at a coalmine in Colombia’s Antioquia province has left at least eight miners dead and several dozen trapped.

Authorities have already said there is little hope of finding any survivors at the San Fernando mine, likely pushing the death toll to more than 80 miners. That hopelessness was expressed by a national disaster spokesman who said “To be honest there is not much (hope), very little, practically none.”

The explosion occurred as the miners were changing shifts around 10 p.m. local time. Because the miners were in the process of exiting and entering the mine the exact number of those still missing remains unclear.

Officials are still trying to determine what caused the blast.
