Israel has announced it will be easing its land blockade of the Gaza Strip, saying it would allow more civilian goods to enter the Palestinian territory.
While the announcement comes after two days of discussions among members of Israel’s security cabinet it took Palestinians much less time to criticize the plan as they have demanded an a complete lifting of the blockade. Israel has insisted the blockade has been necessary to prevent weapons and weapons making material from entering the Gaza Strip.
Since 2007 when Hamas took power in the Gaza Strip the Palestinian territory has been under a tight blockade by Israel and Egypt. Many people have argued that the blockade has failed to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas, saying it has only served to marginalize Palestinians. Many of the items banned from entering the Gaza Strip were arbitrary and didn’t appear to carry any reason.
That has been addressed in the revised list of approved products which will now allow all food items, toys, paper, mattresses, towels and other everyday items into the territory. Israel has also said it will allow cement for civilian projects to cross the border, something that had been blocked in the past due to fears Hamas would use it for weapons.
