Belize Barrier Reef / Whale Shark Activities for Divers & Snorkelers
Our whale shark activities today and Monday are coordinated with the research group, the dive shop at Robert’s Grove and Belize Friends of Nature. We are arranging two activities with the whale sharks and two excursions to other excellent sites. Divers will also be accommodated and everyone will visit Laughing Bird Caye National Park, where we search for manatee and also snorkel along the edge of mangroves. In order to have the maximum opportunity and conduct our whale shark excursion in an environmentally sensitive way, we may need to split our group after we know who will only snorkel and who is planning to scuba dive. Monkey River
This day may be used as a make-up day on the reef if weather was an issue earlier in the week. Otherwise, we will take a boat excursion up the Monkey River to the Monkey River School. This evening we have dinner in Placencia with local villagers. (B,L,D)
Wednesday, April 23
Robert's Grove / Caves Branch / Pook’s Hill
Depart in the morning and travel up the Southern Highway and the over the Hummingbird Highway wearing our swimsuits under our clothes. We stop at Caves Branch and float on inner tubes on a mountain river through a series of caves. It’s guided, safe, very interesting and a lot of fun. After a late lunch, continue on the Hummingbird Highway across the foothills of the Maya Mountains to Pook’s Hill, a small, family owned lodge located in the rainforest. Birding is excellent here and the cottages are placed around the plaza of a small Mayan archaeological site. (B,L,D)

Pook’s Hill / Lake Petén Itzá, Guatemala
Enjoy some early morning birding at Pook’s Hill with our guide. This afternoon we cross the border into Guatemala and visit the market town of Melchor near the border (if time permits and the group is interested). En route to Lake Petén Itzá, we visit the Maya archaeological site of Yaxhá, known for the influence of the ancient Mexican city of Teotihuacan in its style and ornate stelae. Tonight we stay at Francis Ford Coppola’s La Lancha in the rainforests overlooking the lake. (B,L,D)

We have an early morning departure and a 45-minute drive to Tikal National Park. Spend a full day in Tikal, where we examine the ruins of pyramids, plaza complexes, ball courts, terraces and temples with a licensed archaeological guide. Return to La Lancha late in the afternoon. (B,L,D)

Ixpanpajul Nature Reserve
Those who wish may join our guide for birding early this morning before breakfast (offered every morning of our journey). This afternoon cross the lake by boat for dinner at La Lancha. (B,L,D)
