University of Nebraska Medical Center to host discussion on treatment for lung cancer patients on June 19th

Meeting will bring together oncologists, thoracic surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to discuss treatments for non-small cell lung cancer

A program entitled Discussions of Emerging Concepts and Controversies in the Treatment of Patients With Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer is scheduled for Saturday, June 19th in Chicago, Illinois. The program is jointly sponsored by the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Center for Continuing Education and oneconsortium.

The “town hall” style program will focus on advancements in the treatment of NSCLC, or non-small cell lung cancer, which include novel targeted and chemotherapeutic agents, use of tumor characteristics in treatment selection, and maintenance therapy for patients. The discussion will review these and other recent developments in lung cancer treatment. Other topics include use of biomarker analysis, tumor histology, and other issues relevant to patients with NSCLC.

Also discussed will be current clinical trials for patients with NSCLC and similar cancers, such as mesothelioma. Speakers will provide clinical scenarios and attendees will use their knowledge of NSCLC treatment to come up with possible treatment options related to the clinical scenario.

Following the discussion, attendees should be able to assess histologic considerations in an effort to increase the benefits of chemotherapy for patients with NSCLC and similar forms of cancer. Participants will also be able to review the results of recent clinical trials and investigate further the success of certain anti-cancer drugs in NSCLC treatment. In addition, recent studies involving molecular markers and their ability to predict certain responses to therapeutic agents used in NSCLC patients will be available for participant investigation. A discussion regarding the benefits of maintenance therapy specifically for NSCLC patients undergoing treatment will also be held.

The meeting is open to thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, physician assistants and other advanced practitioners, pulmonologists, radiologists and other medical professions inv0olved in the treatment of NSCLC and other patients.

Like patients with NSCLC, people suffering from mesothelioma cancer face a number of issues related to their cancer treatment. Mesothelioma has no known cure, so treatment is simply palliative, and despite the best efforts of highly-skilled mesothelioma doctors, most patients with this type of cancer lose their battle in less than twenty-four months. Therefore, mesothelioma prognosis is bleak. Fortunately, leading oncologists in the field of cancer management such as Dr. David Sugarbaker of Brigham and Women’s Hospital continue to make advancements related to the treatment of mesothelioma.
