Babysitter Lights Up, Loses Kid

A recent near miss with a toddler may prove smoking pot isn’t as harmless as some say.

So much for the “legalize pot” folks who say marijuana is harmless. When a three-year-old wandered out onto a highway, her 18-year-old babysitter was arrested for allegedly smoking marijuana while the girl was in her care.

Chelsea Walkingeagle has been charged with felony child neglect for smoking pot with other family members in a garage while the toddler was walking down a busy roadway, according to South Dakota police officials.

Authorities allege Walkingeagle left the toddler in a car in the parking lot of the apartment complex while she went to the garage to go get high with her uncle and cousin. Cops believe the child was alone for 20 to 30 minutes while Walkingeagle sparked up.

Fortunately, the toddler wasn’t hurt.

Walkingeagle was released on her own recognizance on the condition she passes regular drug tests every three weeks. Her next hearing is on June 17, 2010, and she faces up to five years in prison if convicted of the charges.
