Desiree is subtitled a Midsummer’s night dream-Medley after Shakespeare to indicate the Playwriting aspects of this adolescent’s journal. Desiree daydreams about young imaginary lovers, and can't wait to get married. She also writes in her diary the dialogues that her mind creates for a series of mini-plays. Her madness is almost indistinguishable from the greatness of a talented playwright.
Such incredible progress has been accomplished about the anatomy and physiology of the brain, yet so little is known about the mind itself.
This book, and others written by so called “mentally ill patients” should become resource material for understanding psychiatric patients, as well as for the teaching of future psychiatrists. Serious researchers about the mind, should study it to discover the processes of an over active, obsessed, apprehensive, anticipating, over stimulated mind. And perhaps arrive at new therapies to treat schizophrenia.
The message here is that care must be exerted when treating the mentally ill, to leave intact their creative powers. Remember we should be remembered and recorded n history not for our wars but for the work of our greatest artists. Unfortunately, talent in these individuals if too often overlooked, or repressed if not destroyed by drugs. Consequently society is at risk of losing its greatest treasure.
