Authorities say 66-year-old Bill Hayward has died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. The associate producer of Easy Rider shot himself in the heart with a handgun on March 9. His body was found in his trailer.
Hayward’s death follows in the footsteps of his tragic family life. His mother, actress Margaret Sullavan, died of a drug overdose. Her daughter Bridget died of an overdose eight months later.
As a child Bill was sent to expensive boarding schools and mental institutions. His sister Brooke later wrote a book about their troubled life called ‘Haywire.’ In 1980, the book was made into a TV movie and Bill was the producer.
“He was a wonderful man and this is a great tragedy for out family,” Dennis Hopper, who was married to Brooke Hayward in the 1960’s. Hopper directed and starred in Easy Rider.
Hayward’s body was cremated and a memorial is planned for April.
