Flooding in Southern China Leaves at least 88 People Dead, Dozens Remain Missing

Severe flooding has been blamed for at least 88 deaths in southern China and officials have said as many as 44 more people remain missing.

Heavy rains have been pounding Guangdong province over the past week, causing flash floods and landslides. Many of the residents in the area have been evacuated while several who stayed behind have been left stranded, forced to the rooftops of their homes.

The rains have hammered a number of provinces in China including Fujian, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Guizhou and Sichuan and these rains follow the worst draught to hit the southwest in more than a century.
