Emilio Navaira, Tejano Singer, Critically Injured in Bus Crash

Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira is in critical condition after sustaining severe injuries from a car accident. Navaira and his band ‘Rio’ were riding in their tour bus around 5 a.m. Sunday morning when it slammed into traffic barrels on Interstate 610 in Texas.

Navaira and eight other passengers were injured. He is in the intensive care unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Navaira underwent surgery on Sunday to remove a blood clot in his head. His agent Joe Casias said the next 24 hours “are very critical” for the 45-year-old singer.

All others injured in the crash were doing well. Rio has released dozens of albums. In 2003 their album “Acuerdate” won the Grammy for best Tejano album.
