The bodies of the woman and four children were found Monday morning after dispatchers got a call saying someone should be sent to the home immediately. The caller hung up. When officers arrived the house was unlocked and they were unable to find Sueppel. According to several media reports, the five victims were shot. Authorities have not confirmed how they died.
The University of Iowa was put on alert after a warning was issued that an “active shooter” was in the area. Public schools in Cedar Rapids were put on lockdown as a precaution.
The 42-year-old was the vice president and controller of Hills Bank and Trust. Last month he was indicted on federal charges of stealing nearly $600,000 from the bank. Sueppel stole from the bank from 2000 to 2007. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on $250,000 bail. His trial was set for April.
