Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Christine Beatty Charged With Perjury

Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday that she is charging Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty with perjury.

Kilpatrick and Beatty lied to a grand jury about their intimate relationship and affair. However, text messages and e-mails were found, detailing the relationship between the two.

Beatty resigned soon after the scandal was made public, while Kilpatrick has remained staunch on his stance to stay in office. Kilpatrick also made a public apology on local television, along side his wife, Carlita.

Worthy read the 12-count indictment on Monday morning, citing Kilpatrick's involvement with several instances of lying under oath, misconduct in office and obstruction of justice.

Kilpatrick could face up to 15 years for the charge of perjury. If convicted, this would mean the end of his career as mayor of Detroit. Beatty also faces numerous charges related to perjury and obstruction of justice.
