Secret 2) “The Trailing Thought” - As an Advertising Copywriter myself, I had to choke back some laughter when I first saw this subject line, (I thought it was terrible)…That was until I sent it out and saw the crushing response:
“FIRSTNAME, laziest way ever…”
I thought, “C'mon Ewen, laziest way ever to do WHAT? You're not telling me anything here!” But therein lies the power. I think the reason that particular subject line did so well is because Ewen Chia's “Trailing Thought” caused an intense curiosity to find out what the heck he was talking about! Keep in mind too, he adds a strong benefit in that subject line, even as short as it is. The benefit is that he's got a “Lazy way” to do something - which appeals to most people these days since anything NOT lazy probably requires too much time and energy in this non-stop fast paced world.
Secret 3) “The Power of Brevity” - In general, the best email marketing campaigns I've seen from Ewen Chia are short and sweet. It can be a temptation to make your email marketing
campaigns packed with the same kind of copy and bullets as your sales letter, but don't over-do it.
The most important thing I've learned from Ewen Chia is that the email is NOT the place to do all your “selling.” Ewen Chia tends to leave testimonials, bullets, features, and stories out of the equation and craft a short, benefit packed email that leaves people foaming at the mouth to see what's on the next page.
