Sunni Militant Leader Executed in Iran

Iran has executed the leader of a Sunni militant group, hanging Abdolmalek Riga early Sunday morning for his involvement in a series of terrorist attacks in the province of Sistan-Baluchistan.

The execution order had been handed down by the Tehran Revolutionary Court after finding Riga “responsible for armed robbery, assassination attempts, armed attacks on the army and police and on ordinary people, and murder.”

Riga headed Jundullah, a militant group claiming to fight for the rights of ethnic Baluchis. While the majority of ethnic Baluchis live in Sistan-Baluchistan they are still a significant minority in the Shia state and they claim they are often the target of persecution.

That persecution led to the forming of Jundullah, a militant group the court found “responsible for the killing of 154 members of security forces and other innocent people and wounding of 320 people since 2003.”  The court also found that Jundullah to be “linked to members of foreign intelligence services,” including the U.S., UK and Pakistan.

In February Riga was arrested while on a flight from Dubai to Kyrgyzstan and following his arrest he allegedly admitted to Jundullah’s ties to foreign governments, saying they provided money and weapons to sustain the movement. Those claims have been strongly denied by the countries named in the alleged confession.
