Poland Opens Polls for Presidential Election, First Since Deadly Plane Crash Claimed Life of Lech Kaczynski

Two months after Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski was killed in a plane crash the country took a step closer toward finding his replacement as polls were opened and citizens began casting their vote for one of the ten candidates now seeking the office.

Among those in the hunt for the presidency is Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the late president’s identical twin brother who was Poland’s prime minister before being voted out of office three years ago. Also in the hunt is Bronislaw Komorowski, Poland’s acting president.

Komorowski became the acting president following the deadly plane crash in Smolensk in western Russia on April 10; a crash that not only killed Lech Kaczynski but 95 others including key political and military leaders.

While Komorowski is considered the front-runner for the office Jaroslaw Kaczynski has seen a rise in popularity, something many of his opponents have attributed to the disaster. Komorowski, from the governing Civic Platform party, has insisted that he is candidate to unite the country.

Most suspect that none of the ten candidates with receive more than 50% of the vote which would then lead to a run-off election that would be held on July 4.
