Colombia Begins Run-Off Election to Replace Outgoing President Alvaro Uribe

With President Alvaro Uribe nearing the end of his second term in office Colombians took to the polls on Sunday to cast their vote for his replacement in the country’s run-off election.

The clear favourite in the race is Juan Manuel Santos, a former defence minister who is running as the candidate for Uribe’s Social National Unity Party. Santos nearly won the election outright on May 30 and is widely expected to cruise to a presidential victory by the time voting ends.

Santos is facing off against Antanas Mockus, the former mayor of Bogota. Mockus has been critical of the corruption scandals that have surrounded Uribe’s government and has pledged to eliminate those issues.

Uribe had wanted to seek a third term and went as far as proposing a change to the country’s constitution to allow him to stand for an addition four-year term. That proposal was ruled illegal by the Constitutional Court, ending Uribe’s hopes.

After learning that Uribe would not be able to stand for a third term his supporters began backing Santos.
