Cancer alert: MD Anderson Cancer Center to host annual workshop, bringing together leading oncologists, medical experts

The 8th Annual Disparities in Health in America workshop set to spread knowledge of bio-psychosocial approaches in cancer treatment

The Disparities in Health in America workshop, hosted by the MD Anderson Cancer Center, is held annually to educate attendees, including physicians, nurses, healthcare professionals, social workers, students, educators, community members and community leaders, on cancer treatment. The event includes lectures, panel discussions and question-and-answer sessions to facilitate better communication and understanding of the most recent findings on social, behavioral and medical determinants of health.

The information addressed is used to demonstrate and create awareness of these findings and factors contributing to disparity in social health, to identify the roles of health professionals in eliminating these disparities and to better understand available resources for the reduction of health disparities.

The MD Anderson Cancer Center was first opened in 1941 at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. According to U.S. News and Reports’ “America’s Best Hospitals 2009” list, it is the best hospital in the nation for cancer care. The MD Anderson Cancer Center has achieved one of the top two rankings in this category for the last 20 years. The center’s mission statement is “to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.”

Some of the key speakers at this year’s workshop include:

Vivian W. Pinn, MD, - Associate Director, Research on Women’s Health, Director, Office of Research on Women’s Health, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD.

John Ruffin, PhD, MS, – Director of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth Cohen, MPH – CNN Senior Medical Correspondent, Health & Medical Unit, CNN News Network.

John Quinones. MS, BA – Co-Anchor, ABC News Primetime, Houston, TX.

Colin L. Soskolne, PhD - Professor of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

A prominent issue that will be addressed at this event is malignant mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs and heart that is caused by exposure to asbestos. This type of cancer is often untreatable due to late detection caused by lack of symptoms in early stages, leaving patients with only a one to two year life expectancy. There will be prominent discussion about the disease’s causes and symptoms as well as mesothelioma treatment.

The workshop begins on June 21st, 2010 and runs through June 26th, with a different topic addressed each day. To see the full agenda, as well as additional speakers, please visit:
