Poland’s Presidential Election Heading to Run-Off as No Clear Majority Reached in First Round of Voting

Poland’s acting leader Bronislaw Komorowski collected 41.22% of the votes cast in Sunday’s presidential elections in Poland, enough to edge Jaroslaw Kaczynski who tallied 36.74% at the polls yet because no single candidate reached a clear majority the election will now head to a run-off on July 4.

Komorowski, member of the Civic Platform party, was the clear favourite in the race but he found it difficult to distance himself from Kaczynski, the identical twin brother of former President Lech Kaczynski who was killed in a plane crash in Smolensk on April 10.

That plane crash, which killed 96 people including several of Poland’s top political and military leaders, opened the door for Jaroslaw. Prior to the deadly crash he had little support outside his own socially conservative bloc yet he has been able to present himself as a changed man willing to compromise for the betterment of the country.

It remains to be seen if Kaczynski can carry that momentum into the run-off where he will need the support of voters who cast their ballot for the other candidates in Sunday’s election.
