Wimbledon 2010 Round 1 Results: Roger Federer Avoids Disaster, Fights Back from Two Sets Down to Knock Off Alejandro Falla

Roger Federer avoided what many would have considered the biggest upset in Wimbledon history, battling back from two sets down to knock off Alejandro Falla 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 to advance at the All England Club.

Federer very nearly saw his Wimbledon title defense end in the first round but staged a remarkable turnaround in the third set and a gutsy battle in the fourth where he forced a tie-breaker and after collecting the set Falla had no chance in the fifth.

Federer finished with 21 aces and 101 winners, staggering figures but necessary to overcome Falla who, for two sets, looked to be in perfect position to stage an incredible upset.

Federer collected his fourth career Australian Open title earlier this year but fell out of the French Open in the quarterfinals. The Swiss star does own a career Grand Slam having won his first French Open title in 2009 to go along with his five U.S. Open titles and six Wimbledon titles. Federer’s 16 Grand Slam singles titles are most of any male player.
