Nikolay Davydenko certainly pushed himself to the limit in his opening round match at the 2010 Wimbledon on Monday, dropping his fist two sets only to battle back against Kevin Anderson and win a five set marathon 3-6, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 9-7 to advance at the All England Club.
Davydenko was at the mercy of Anderson’s serve for most the match as the South African fired off 36 aces and won points on 82% of his first serves put in play. Despite the powerful serve of Anderson the Russian managed to keep his composure and capitalized on the opportunities he had, collecting break points on four of his seven chances.
Davydenko is still searching for his first Grand Slam singles title. He reached the semifinals at U.S. Open in 2006 and 2007. The Russian has also reached the semifinals of the French Open twice but has yet to advance to the finals at a Grand Slam event. His best finish at Wimbledon has been a fourt round appearance in 2007.
