The FBI believes they may have the parachute that hijacker D.B. Cooper used to jump out of a plane in 1971. A group of children found a parachute, similar to the one Cooper used, while playing on a part of rural property near owned by their father.
The parachute was found inside Cooper’s projected landing zone near Amboy, Washington. “If D.B. Cooper had pulled his chute not long after that jump, he would have landed in that area,” said Agent Larry Carr, who is the lead agent on the Cooper case. “Is this D.B. Cooper’s parachute? We don’t know yet.”
A man who identified himself as Dan Cooper boarded a commercial flight from Portland to Seattle on November 24, 1971. After telling the crew that he had a bomb, Cooper demanded $200,000 and 4 parachutes. He used a parachute to jump from the plane and another to secure the money. Cooper jumped 20 miles north of Portland in heavy wind and rain.
Mystery surrounds his fate as the money was never put into circulation and no evidence has ever linked anyone to the case. The FBI believes Cooper died during the jump because of the weather conditions. His body has never been found and his real identity has not been discovered.
In 1980, $5,800 of the money was found on the banks of the Colombia River. Carr says if the parachute found was Coopers, the theory of his death would be inaccurate. Carr said the money could not have ended up where it was found by natural means if Cooper landed where the parachute was found.
“No matter what you do with this case, the mystery deepens,” Carr added.
