Transgender Man Thomas Beatie Claims He's Pregnant

Thomas Beatie, a transgendered man from Oregon, claims that he is pregnant, according to gay publication The Advocate.

Beatie, who was born a woman named Tracy Lagondino, told The Advocate that he had reassignment surgery to appear as a man outwardly, but he never surgically altered his reproductive organs.

Beatie only received chest reconstruction and began taking testosterone, but he still has ovaries and a uterus.

Beatie said he was able to get pregnant using artificial insemination and is expecting a baby girl with his wife, Nancy. He said he was 22 weeks along. The baby is due July 3.

Transgender men use testosterone to gain more masculine qualities, but since Beatie stopped getting injections, he was able to get pregnant.

Beatie, who resides in Bend, Oregon, is not the first transgender man to give birth. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center obstetrician Dr. Lisa Masterson said on "Good Morning America" that another transgender man has given birth before.

"To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child," Beatie wrote, explaining that his wife is unable to conceive. "I will be my daughter's father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family."
