Walk Team from Plano with Many Ties to Survivors

Won $1000 Sponsorship from Massage Envy Clinics

Third Base or Bust, a Plano team that walked in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure last weekend, also won a $1000 contribution for its essay on the team.

Plano resident Erica Brown of Third Base or Bust said her team has many ties to breast-cancer survivors. Breast cancer survivors on the team included Katie Stevens and Shelley Van Derven.

Massage Envy, a long-time Susan G. Komen for the Cure supporter, sponsored two $1000 donations for the best essays on walk teams. Massage Envy is the largest provider of massage therapy in the United States.

Ms. Brown wrote in her winning essay that "Not only is my paternal grandmother a survivor but five other remarkable women that I love are survivors too. I raise money especially for them but also for every woman and man that has or is fighting this horrible disease.  My Grandma Avis is a 26-year survivor and at 95 years old she is still kicking. I could only dream of being as strong as she is.”

Ms. Brown said she is close to many breast-cancer survivors, including her cousin Nina Amodio and long-time friends Cynthia Camuel, Jeanne Burk, Kristen Markiewicz, and Barbara Kupferman.

She said these survivors “are my heroes, and raising money for research and development is the least I can do for them.  My efforts fail in comparison to their battles. But I will continue to raise awareness to everyone around me until we find a cure!”

“We had such an overwhelming response that we could not pick just one team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure sponsorship,” said Lance O’Pry, Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Developer for Massage Envy, the nation’s leading provider of massage therapy. “As a long-time supporter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the DFW Massage Envy clinics were thrilled to sponsor these two deserving teams.”

Besides its two $1000 donations, Massage Envy supplied co-branded shirts to the two teams it sponsored. The three members on each team who raised the most money received a Massage Envy gift card for a free massage.

At the race, a special area at Massage Envy’s tent was reserved for team members to receive a free chair massage from Massage Envy therapists.

At Massage Envy, an introductory one-hour massage session (a 50-minute massage and time for consultation and dressing) is just $39. Memberships are available for $49 per month and include a one-hour massage session. Members may also enjoy unlimited additional one-hour massage sessions at the $39 member rate.
