Steven Sueppel Beat Wife, 4 Kids to Death

Autopsies have shown that Sheryl Sueppel and her four children were beaten to death. Their bodies were found in their Iowa home after Steven Sueppel called 911. The results show that they died of blunt force trauma to their upper torsos and heads.

Authorities believe Steven, a former bank executive, murdered his family sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning. Investigators say Steven, 42, killed his wife first. He then tried to kill he and the children by asphyxiating them in the garage with carbon monoxide.

After that failed, investigators believe Steven murdered 10-year-old Ethan, 8-year-old Seth, 5-year-old Mira and 3-year-old Elenor one by one in separate rooms of the house. Two of the children’s bodies were found in upstairs bedrooms and the other two in basement bedrooms. Sheryl’s body was found in their master bedroom.

Sueppel attempted to kill himself again by drowning in the Iowa River. After that attempt failed, he took the families mini van and crashed into a freeway abutment. The van burst into flames and Sueppel's charred body was identified using medical records.

Two baseball bats found in the home are being examined as they may have been what Sueppel used to kill his wife and children. He left a long note in the family’s kitchen apologizing. Sueppel also left numerous messages at his former bank office and the law office of his brother and father.

He was vice president of Hills Bank and Trust but fired after he was indicted on charges of stealing $560,000 from the bank. Sueppel pleaded not guilty to the charges and was out on $250,000 bail. His trial was set for April 21.
