Rapper Remy Ma Convicted of Assault, Facing 25 Years

Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma is now facing up to 25 years in prison following her conviction on assault charges related to a shooting in July 2007.

Remy Ma, born Remy Smith, was convicted in New York’s state Supreme Court and will now await her sentencing which is scheduled for April 23. She was ordered held without bail until that date.

On the night of July 14, 2007 Ma pulled a gun on a friend who she believed stole $3,000 from her. The two women struggled and according to Ma the gun discharged accidentally. Her friend, Makeda Barnes Joseph, was left with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and underwent three surgeries, a fact she testified to in court.
