Remy Ma Found Guilty on Four Charges, Faces 25 Years in Prison

Remy Ma, the Grammy-nominated rapper, was found guilty on four criminal charges and faces up to 25 years in jail, stemming from a shooting that occurred last July.

Remy Ma was found guilty on two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion, and criminal possession of a weapon. Charges of tampering and gang assault, related to the case, were thrown out.

Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith, was involved in an argument last July with a friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, while leaving a mutual acquaintance's birthday party.

The rapper, whose name was shortened from Remy Martin for legal reasons, alleged that Barnes-Joseph stole $3000 from her purse. Barnes-Joseph was shot after the two struggled in her car. Remy Ma fled the scene, crashing her car nearby.

Remy Ma's lawyer claimed that the rapper did shoot Barnes-Joseph, but it was an accident, saying the gun went off as both were struggling in the car.

Remy Ma will be sentenced on April 22, but is held without bail.

In 2004, Remy Ma, then a member of Terror Squad, was nominated for a Grammy for "Lean Back".
