Adam Duritz, the lead singer of Counting Crows, has been diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a mental disorder that causes people to have multiple, distinctive personalities.
Earlier versions of the disorder were known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD).
Duritz, 43, has been battling severe depression for years in addition to the new diagnosis.
The Counting Crows website details that the disorder has contributed to the duration between albums and the inspiration of many of his song lyrics.
The Counting Crows released their latest album Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings Tuesday. It is their first album in six years.
In his personal life, Duritz dated Mary Louise Parker, Samantha Mathis and Monica Potter, whom he wrote the song "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" about prior to meeting her.
