Friends of Garza’s reported him missing to campus security the next day. They believed he may have gone to a cabin that was out of cell phone service, so his mother didn’t file a missing person report until five days later.
Authorities searched the college campus twice, but found no clues to Garza’s whereabouts. The last large-scale search was conducted on February 23.
On Thursday, the search for Garza resumed with state police and search experts combing the campus for the teen’s body or any clues that might solve the mystery surrounding his disappearance. Search dogs, Fiberglas poles and a global positioning system were used in the recovery operation.
The poles were used to poke holes in the snow so the search dogs may pick up a scent. The search turned up nothing, but police spokesman Tom Scanlon said they would try again in two weeks.
Police do not suspect foul play. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Garza’s recovery.
