Three Rivers Prison Riot Leaves One Dead, 15 Hospitalized

A riot at the Three Rivers Prison in south Texas leaves one inmate dead and fifteen others hospitalized on Friday.

The cause of death for the dead inmate has not been determined, but officials say that prison guards did not use blunt force to break up the fight.

No staff members were injured.

A pair of fights broke out at the prison around 7am on Friday morning as breakfast ended and the day shift of guards was coming onto duty. The cause of the riot and number of inmates involved is still under investigation.

Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Deborah Denham said the incident was brought under control quickly, and the community was never in danger.

An autopsy will be performed on the inmate who died, but his identity wasn't immediately released because authorities were notifying his family.

Three Rivers Prison, located 70 miles southeast of San Antonio in Live Oak County, has about 1,160 inmates.

The riot was the second at a Texas federal prison in the last two weeks.

There was a riot involving 80 inmates at a federal prison in downtown Houston two weeks ago. Houston police and firefighters used a stun grenade to stop the brawl.
